A simple, solid, deeply affecting film telling the story of an enterprising Saudi girl who signs on for her school's Koran recitation competition as a way to raise the remaining funds she needs in order to buy the green bicycle that has captured her interest.
Transgressive in the best possible way, Wadjda presents a startlingly assured new voice from it's corner of the globe. Wadjda is something rare: the work of a female Saudi filmmaker, Haifaa Al Mansour, and a feature from a country that has long outlawed cinemas.
